Platforms, algorithms and AI: Issues and hypotheses in the mediatization perspective

This imaginary functions as “social algorithms” that operate not on a death drive, but on the drive for life. To clarify, it would be productive to observe Indigenous cosmologies not as a return to a time prior to contact with colo- nial society but as modes of survival that coexist with capitalist advancements, both material and epistemic. These cosmologies may indicate paths already traveled that Western intellectu- als are only beginning to discover (Demos, 2016). What Latour (2018) proposes may already be present in worldviews historically silenced or classified by anthropologists as “primitive” and therefore dismissed by the Western industrial imaginary. How- ever, it is important to remember that industrial and technological development still depends on the expropriation of lands and bodies still considered “primitive” and non-human by hegemon- ic views based on régimes of exclusion, especially in formerly colonized territories (Couldry and Mejías, 2017). This also applies to academic territories, such as the emerging transdisciplinary field of media archaeology for instance, or to Latin American researchers from non-hegemonic territories who work with other epistemologies and decolo- nize academia from within. According to Estrada and Lehuédé (2022), this perspective should already be a starting point for Latin American researchers, considering that much of the ex- tractivism and expropriation sustaining the Internet complex occurs in their territories. 6. Internet Nullius The communicational, media-related, socio-environ- mental, and political aspects of these territories, and the “oth- ers” who inhabit them, signify a profound shift.
