Platforms, algorithms and AI: Issues and hypotheses in the mediatization perspective

Antônio Fausto Neto 176 culatory dynamics produce changes in the routines and structures of journalistic production, especially affecting aspects that involve its identity dimension. Possibly, one of the effects of this new scenario also has to do with the transformations of the “statute” of the event and of the news itself. We know that interference from exter- nal “grammars” on the routines of the journalistic field points to a displacement of the activity. Journalism, thus, goes from a “mediation zone” (as preached by functionalism) to other “con- tact zones”, in which the social construction of newsworthiness begins to be disputed by foundations and practices of different social systems. We call attention to some problems identified in the observational processes of our research over the years, especially aspects that concern the complexification of circulation activity in times of mediatization in process. It should be noted that, in this more complex transformation of the communicational am- biance, mass media structures are being subsumed by “architec- tures” and network logics, through which institutions and actors of different natures begin to connect directly with each other – dispensing with the classic mediational structures. This is a phenomenon attributed to the “access revolution”, which is the result of the creation of the internet and its complex impacts on different social fields (in terms of interac- tional protocols). Under these conditions, communication practices that were in force until then move to such an environment, subordinating themselves to its dynamics and logics and operat- ing according to interchangeabilities based on complex circulation processes. These mutations would be related to interactional pat- terns characterized by “horizontal links”, in which everyone would communicate with each other. It should be noted, how- ever, that this is a problematic proposition. We know that jour- nalistic activity, when it is moved to the world of networks, is regulated by the presence of neogatekeepers, many of whom are characters distant from the nature and domain of this craft. Let us remember that the ambiance of mediatization, as it is constituted by a diversity of crafts, flows, logics and cultures, gener- ates techno-discursive operations that transform singularities
