Platforms, algorithms and AI: Issues and hypotheses in the mediatization perspective

Circulation: from the passage zone to the ambiance of interpenetrations of meanings 187 Analytically observing the circulation in mediatization in process would imply taking into account marks of its manifes- tations, going beyond the edges of media processes. To this end, it would be necessary to consider the occurrence of other dynamics, removing the circulation, so to speak, from “shadow zones” (Fausto Neto, 2010b). This would imply following circulation ac- cording to clues that would stand out in a broader environment, signaling the first evidence of transformations that would point to the occurrence of complex interactional protocols. This problem is being recovered, both from a theoretical point of view and in empirical terms, by a set of reflections developed throughout the reported research, materialized in ar- ticles in which we reflect on such transformations. From a theoretical point of view, we drew attention to something that was happening in the landscape of the mass media, especially jour- nalistic media, in contact with the dynamics of mediatization5. We took care to point out mutations that manifested themselves in the ambiances, identities and discursiveness of journalists, as well as in their relationship with readers (Fausto Neto, 2011b). Several factors signaled clues about something we named, at the time, as ambulation, fading or weakening of mediation structures6. We noticed that numerous transformations were tak- ing place in the productive processes, as the events escaped the boundaries of the news media and began to have their construc- tion directly enunciated by different social fields (Fausto Neto; Weschenfelder, 2012). In short, the narrativities begin to “escape” from the norms of the editorial manuals and other guide- lines woven in the environment of journalistic production to be permeated by inputs of the emerging platformization (Fausto Neto, 2012a). Complex events, such as street demonstrations, escape the hands of journalists and their production processes, become dynamic through the agendas, methodologies and logics of so- 5 CNPq research project “Affectations of mediatization on the craft of journalism: ambiance, identities, discursiveness and interactional processes”, valid from 2010 to 2015. 6 These notions were also debated by this researcher during the III Seminar on Epistemology and Research in Communication, held in Goiânia in 2011.
