Platforms, algorithms and AI: Issues and hypotheses in the mediatization perspective

Viviane Borelli 216 of a market-driven ecosystem grants them the power to set the rules of the world’s information ecosystems and govern them” (Van Dijck, 2022, p. 41). Therefore, for her, the diversification of the platform ecosystem is an urgent necessity, technical principles (data design and interface design, for instance) and ethi- cal issues must be more transparent so that collective values are preserved. 5. Clues for further research Careful observation, attention to detail, and clues enable us to infer that we are dealing with complex processualities, which demand reflection and problematization and not just de- scriptions of what is collected. The transversality of techniques and methodologies is essential for problematizing our studies on societies undergoing mediatization and the processes of cir- culation of meanings. In both cases, we notice a very strong tension in jour- nalism. In the first, we witness a need to reorganize the media and journalistic system to address what is observed as a symptom of the processes of mediatization and circulation. While, in the second, we notice dissonance between what is said by public figures and institutions on their official profiles and what is generated to circulate on personal profiles on the platforms. We can observe irritation (Luhmann, 2005, 2009) to- wards the media, journalism, and public institutions. The question that remains to be better reflected upon is whether this ir- ritation can be perceived by the systems and transformed into communication for internal strengthening and maintenance of the complexity and specificity of the system itself. Given the complexities that permeate the communicational processes of these social systems, limiting research to one platform or another can lead to biased research that is devoid of problematization. Regarding this empirical work and the effort to work with quantitative and qualitative data, I would like to highlight that the textual data points to clues that need to be problema- tized by the researcher’s place of observation, who cannot give up elaborating complex questions and creating their data for an-
