Platforms, algorithms and AI: Issues and hypotheses in the mediatization perspective

1. Introduction: The concept of mediatization in Verón, clues to accompany an epistemological turn5 The perspective that references our research on circula- tion was founded by Eliseu Verón, about 40 years ago. It is impor- tant to ponder that despite its importance as an epistemological and methodological approach, circulation as an object is not suf- ficient for the understanding of mediatization as a whole, while it directs the concept of mediatization in Verón and research that dialogues with this current. We will see that in this article. In this article, it is not our focus to bring other episte- mological interfaces that we use to think about mediatization. Verón’s perspective on mediatization is not the only perspective of the south, as there are also currents that we call philosophical and indicative. Taken as a whole, the perspectives of Latin America are not necessarily antagonistic to the currents of the north (institutionalist, socioconstructivist and the political economy of communication – Gresec, de Grenoble). What is transversal in the research developed in Latin America? Mediatization is a process of social construction of reality. However, each current problematizes this cross-cutting axis in a specific way, including a diversity of what we call levels 5 This work was originally published in Ferreira, 2024a.
