Platforms, algorithms and AI: Issues and hypotheses in the mediatization perspective

Jairo Ferreira 260 of the senders and receivers of the materialized signs, as a result of exteriorization; its secondari- ness is the subsequent persistence in time of the materialized signs: alterations in the scales of space and time become inevitable, and the nar- rative justified; its thirdness is the body of social norms defining the forms of access to signs that are already autonomous and persistent. In other words: threefold creation of differences. In this context, mediatization is only the name for the long historical sequence of media phenomena be- ing institutionalized in human societies and their multiple consequences. The conceptual advantage of the long-term perspective is to remind us that what is happening in late modern societies began, in fact, a long time ago (Verón, 2014, p. 15-16). This epistemological turn demands a rediscussion of Verón’s work, considering previous formulations that are con- tradictory, if not antagonistic, with this new hypothesis. We do not know if this will happen, but it is a central discussion to re- configure the concept of mediatization within the scope of this South American current that he inaugurated. In the next section, we present some contributions to this reconfiguration. 2. Cross-sectional inferences: mediatization from diverse appropriations It is important, in these reflections, to preserve the propositions about circulation, lags and construction of collec- tives and regulation, which do not lose explanatory potential even if we consider the hypothesis that mediatization belongs to a long historical cycle, according to the article by Verón (2014) cited above. This reflective core – circulation, lags, construction of collectives and regulation – is valuable for empirical research – and allows ascending inferences, from microanalysis to meta- analysis, through macro and meso-analysis. Another proposition that underlies the reflective core above is the understanding of mediatization as a process linked,
