297 We Have Never Been Mediatized: Reflections on the Relations Between Latin American and European Approaches to Mediatization1 Nunca fomos midiatizados: reflexões sobre as relações entre as abordagens latinoamericana e europeia da midiatização Göran Bolin2 Abstract: The paper discusses similarities and differences be- tween the European and Latin-American perspectives on media- tization and argues that humans have always been mediatized, that is, have always relied on communication technologies for the organization of society and for common life together. Following from this, it discusses to what extent society is mediatized, in what way society is moulded by media technologies, with a spe- cific focus on the ways in which the media are organized, and what potentials for meaning-making they offer.
