Platforms, algorithms and AI: Issues and hypotheses in the mediatization perspective

Lucrécia D´Alessio Ferrara 326 In a way, we can understand that the development of the media has accompanied the transformation of subjectiva- tion and has progressed from the phase in which it was imme- diately linked to the media as a mass and opinion dominated by imitation, to its dimension as a subject that uses technique as its creator and therefore transformer of its individuation, to its meta-individual dimension (Simondon, 2007, p. 131 and the following). 9. Mediatization as technoimmunization Immunization and the media are concepts that con- temporary modernity has brought together and seem to have intertwined. If, as biology, health, and politics, immunization is contradictory, the media, as mediation, is no different: in both cases we have a contradiction that forces us to work at the tan- gent of the two concepts, to be able to apprehend, at their respective borders, the possibility of finding ways out that allow us to go beyond that contradictory mark, which would prevent us from thinking and reflecting. As the power to preserve life, immunization has four basic categories: immunization itself, which contradictorily pre- serves health by exposing it to the germ of disease; sovereignty, which at the same time protects the subject and submits them to power; property, which ensures the possession of an asset, alienating the subject from their possibilities of finding common alternatives to the collective; freedom, which, emphasizing its contradictory nature, transforms immunization into a device that deprives the subject of deciding which paths to choose, according to their own will. More than ever, man finds himself submissive to a selection that, although it is of an economic and social character, is equally ruthless and can exclude him from his decision-making capacity (Esposito, 2006, p.73 e segs.). In parallel, although focused on media analysis, we can observe that media technology in all its propositions, especially concerning the digital, also presents itself as contradictory be- cause, while immunizing the subject, it subjects him to its con- trol over time, space, entertainment, and selective options.
