Introduction With the increasing circulation of the word “algorithm” in society, specialists are trying to show that the expression does not refer to something mysterious: “An algorithm is a sequence of rules designed to solve problems. In other words, they are schematic steps that accomplish a task” (Patel, 2022). Adding a didactic explanation: “Even a cake recipe can be considered an algorithm” (idem). At this generic and all-encompassing level of the word, almost everything in the social environment would be an algo- rithm – the word becomes correlated with “habitual ways of doing” in a culture. The only time we fail to find such “algorithms” is when we must address lesser-known problems – and we don’t yet have a solution designed, nor defined steps to obtain it. In the absence of standards, we depend on experimentation, con- jectures, and heuristic processes – precisely to find out how to face this type of problem. Experimentation generates a learning process in context, which can be individual or come to be configured as an available social pattern – in this case, gen- erating a new “algorithm”. Not only do we live surrounded by cultural standards, but we also create them for frequent use - which means we do not have to repeatedly reinvent solutions to already known issues. In the context of social standards, if we can consider a culinary recipe as an algorithm, we must complement the characterization by recognizing that different people will carry out the process according to their personal diversity – and will obtain different results. Thus, it involves a rigorous part – the recipe, for instance – and a flexible and personable part in its
