Interactional digital algorithm 335 For the same type of issue, tactical and strategic variations arise – which leads to the problem of selecting the most effective ones. Inevitably, different individuals, groups and so- cial sectors adopt different selections. This leads to risks of relative ineffectiveness or, in some areas, conflict, polarization and violence. Variations are continually produced in history, at all levels – ranging from culture, politics, social institutions, professional specialties and the diversity of social environments, to in- dividual decisions. The proposal of algorithmization to achieve “automatic” outcomes (where factual variations are captured and selections are automatically made) becomes very tempting, limiting the stress that may be associated with the hesitations mentioned above. We thus have a general approximation of culturally de- veloped patterns and operational modes – which I categorize as “communicational processors.” If we include interactional digital algorithms in this set of processors, we must recognize their specificity, resulting from a significant expansion of mathema- tized elements and a corresponding reduction in uncertainty – but also a reduction in subjective variations, improvisation, the possibility of adjustments, course correction and the plasticity to adapt to human diversity. The above comparison between flexible cultural pro- cessors and processors properly algorithmic provides a basis for understanding some of the challenges presented by the latter. 3. Digital interactional algorithms and their challenges To effectively grasp a specific type of interactional processuality, we must observe its logic, learn the objectives of the task that will show up in sequenced steps, understand the rela- tionships between the rules and the results – and, by perceiving the benefits, also be mindful of the risks and challenges involved and will be addressed.
