1. Introduction3 At the time of the first writing of this text, I cannot fail to mention Brazil’s presidential election, which took place amid extensive communication processes impregnated with cognitive dissonance, and which, with the victory of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in 2022, marks Brazil’s return to the BRICS scenario. Bra- zil’s relationship with nation-states such as Russia, India, China, and South Africa bring back the geopolitical imagination of the multipolar world and renews the importance of the so-called democratic markers for newsworthiness. The consolidation of the mediatization phenomenon and its structuring in conjunction with the unique transforma- tions of society has prompted the emergence of theoretical contributions, conceptual objects, and analytical devices that aim to meet the needs of the new configurations of affected practices. The current understanding of mediatization as an influential concept in the media is a precedent for journalism stud- ies as it contradicts a previous use related to imperialism. Jour- nalism as a traditional media operator is currently experiencing difficulties (Deuze; Witschge, 2015). Understanding journalism as an activity linked to the capitalist economic system, and es- pecially mainstream media coverage, presents a complex issue when it comes to emerging economies such as that of Brazil (Pa- ganotti, 2016). 3 Text produced with funding from CAPES-STINT Program no. 0862/2020, Case no. 88881.465493/2019-0.
