Platformed interaction in the multipolar world Journalism, autocracy, and democracy 61 The so-called Liberal International Order (LIO) encompasses three key institutions that are currently being challenged: democracy, markets, and multilateralism (Adler; Drischova, 2021). The existence of a conflict on European territory start- ed in 2022 involving Russia and Ukraine draws attention to the crisis of the Eurocentric model in current newsworthiness and calls multilateralism into question. Brazil, as a member of the BRICS initiative, highlights the emerging multipolar order and mobilizes public opinion with new values. On the other hand, the increasing complexity of the communicational processes that journalism needs to address to fulfill its mission requires, more and more, the incorporation of a sociotechnical dimension that refers to the horizon of mediatization. As has been debated in previous Seminars on Research on Mediatization and Social Processes, mediatization implies a new moment for communication, as asserted by Ferrara: “Medi- atization is a process of Semiosis adhering to technology” (Ferrara, 2023, p. 4). Furthermore, “Mediatization is the term that converges to the study of those consequences and the immuniz- ing characteristics of life that materialize, to the extent that we submit ourselves to new media literacy and the mastery of tech- nical devices, which translate immunizing powers and create a sociocultural class” (Ferrara, 2023, p. 1). The aim of approaching the interactional activity in- volved in journalism requires discerning between a variety of environments that have been generically designated as digital platforms. The allusion to digital platforms conceives them as bridges and resorts to the set articulated by software, applica- tions, websites, systems, databases, video streaming, or social media, among other resources that serve as points of connectiv- ity and online interaction between users, content aggregators, and networks that, with their products and services brought together by the companies responsible for them, have completely renewed the communicational challenge of news activity. Thus, the challenges of platformed interaction involve studying platforms and their inherent algorithmic process re- quirements or datafication. However, more than just envisioning
