Machado da Silveira 62 the socio-technical dimension of such processes, I believe that platformed interaction aptly displays the confrontation between views of exercising political power, which includes the practice of journalism in democratic societies, and facing another, considered characteristic of autocratic societies. The text is divided into three sections. To address the issue of journalism and platformed interaction, I explain the arguments that underlie its understanding from the perspective of mediatization and the transition from the radial system to the deconcentration supposed in the emerging circuit system operated via digital media networks. In the following, the principles of journalism in societies considered democratic are briefly re- viewed to highlight the connections between journalism and the liberal order. In the next section, I discuss the role of journalism in the so-called autocratic societies. In the final remarks, I return to the question raised in this introduction about whether there is anything in common between the societies that integrate the BRICS in this regard and the structural changes in journalism in the face of the increase in autocratic political practices. I specifically point to the emerging issue of journalism and autocracy and its development in platformed environments under the con- ditions in which it operates in Brazil. 2. Mediatization, journalism and democracy When considering journalism as a communicational activity, I ponder the relevance of characteristics such as its re- lationship with reality, the nature of its product (information), and its anchoring in the public interest (Silva; França, 2017). With the conflictive horizon affecting Eurocentric values, it is re- quired to promote a discussion that considers the news activity in parameters that transcend the worldview that is collapsing. It is well known that journalistic deontology under- pins the activity as one of the pillars of liberal democracies in the West. In other societies, like Brazilian, autocratic journalism practices are evident. I, therefore, pose the question of the weight of the platformization of journalism as an element that qualifies or hinders its processes. I believe it shows the confron-
