Platforms, algorithms and AI: Issues and hypotheses in the mediatization perspective

Introduction During the COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil, especially in 2020, it became common for images and videos of people screaming in hospitals to circulate on social media and for news sites to publish stories about these invasions (Azevedo, 2020; Pessoa, 2020; Seabra, 2020). During the 2022 presidential po- litical election campaign, the shouting erupted in other traditionally silent spaces, the ritual of mass in Catholic churches in various parts of the country. The sound asepsis of hospital environments and ritualized mass spaces was disrupted, not by the sounds tradition- ally associated with these contexts – the monotone voice of the priest in the Catholic homily or the nonconformist weeping in the face of physical and psychological suffering – but by the ex- pression of political manifestations. Shouts from individuals ea- ger to fill sacralized spaces, who denied the very existence of the pandemic, claiming that hospital beds “supposedly” intended for COVID-19 patients were empty, or even that priests were de- fending “communism” by expressing support for values such as democracy and human rights. From a communicational perspective, we can connect the different episodes, which took place in different contexts but share the common character of expressing perceptions coming from the same political spectrum, the field of Bolsonaro’s far- right supporters in the country. These are unidirectional communicative instances, under which mass forms of expression have not been established in their communication contract, but rituals in closed circuits (Catholic mass and hospital) that cir-
