Platforms, algorithms and AI: Issues and hypotheses in the mediatization perspective

Aline Roes Dalmolin 80 data, in an individual and group autopoiesis, without the trigger of an external reality to activate it. Communication unfolds through an endless (and purposeless) revolving network, expanding its scope with each turn in a tautological process (Sfez, 2007, p. 114). In a study carried out over two years in a group, Dibai and D’Almonte (2022) confirm the tautological nature of Bol- sonaro’s communication, as it is nurtured by a relationship of intense love and hate. Love is expressed in an unrestricted way to Bolsonaro’s image, while hatred aims to target a network of opponents, in which the generic denomination of the left/ PT is certainly characterized as a privileged target, but which also seeks to target former Bolsonaro supporters and all those who represent some kind of opposition to Bolsonaro (Dibai & D’Almonte, 2022). The authors note that, in the analyzed group, with around 35,000 members, support for Bolsonaro has devel- oped in such an unrestricted way that it is maintained even in the repercussions of his most absurd statements during the pan- demic. In this sense, they propose two axes to understand the nature of the cult of leadership that takes place in this context: Bolsonaro as greater than democracy itself and truer than the facts themselves (Dibai & D’Almonte, 2022). The discovery, after the second round of the presidential elections in2022, of a large part of the population denying the most basic principles of the democratic process, leads us to re- flect on the communication processes that allow these episodes to unfold. It calls to attention the need to reflect on the commu- nication processes related to the Brazilian far-right, which goes beyond a content-based approach based on the assumption of the “dissemination of fake news in parallel networks”. This chapter seeks to deepen the understanding of polarized communication processes, taking as an empirical element the communication developed within the Bolsonaro infor- mation bubbles. The text delves into the debate on polarization as a structure of intolerance (Braga, 2020), adding to it a reflection on the circulation modalities involved in this specific inter- actional process, exemplified from the Brazilian context.
