Apocalyptic and moderate people: the senses of COVID-19 among Brazilian evangelical leaders
Abstract
Like several influencers, Brazilian evangelical leaders published in media their respective ideas and opinions regarding COVID-19, which caused the death of millions of people in several countries. However, the pandemic’s religious interpretation was pluralistic, based on each leadership’s conveniences. This work presents five leaders as a representation of evangelical diversity, namely: Antônio Carlos Costa, leader of the Presbyterian Church; Ed René Kivitz, leader of the Baptist Church; Caio Fábio, leader without denominational affiliation; Edir Macedo, bishop of the Universal Church; and Silas Malafaia, leader of the Assembly of God Victory in Christ. We question the production of meanings on COVID-19, based on the analysis of data published on YouTube channels by these leaders.
