Mutations: knowledge about circulation in circulation The year was 1984, and photographer Steve McCurry was in Afghanistan to cover a war. His photographs were des- tined for editions of National Geographic, at the time a magazine with wide circulation. From experiencing an extreme conflict, McCurry produced one of the most famous images of all time: the Afghan girl. The photograph (fig. 01) that made the cover of the June 1985 issue became one of the most emblematic: it was about a child with eyes that disturbed the spectators, almost like a provocation. After 17 years, the unknown child, one of the thousands amid the conflict, was found by the photographer.
